Efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems make buildings safer and healthier and play a vital role in many industries. However, these systems also come with inherent risks, and efforts must be made to understand the dangers. Shaun Evers, managing director of Stonegate Instruments, discusses how technology can be utilised to address these risks.

VAC systems are of extreme importance for many businesses in many sectors, including electricity production, data centres, chemical, pharmaceutical,


and of course food and beverage sectors. As with any system there are safety considerations and concerns, and in the case of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in businesses and large residential buildings, these include personnel getting trapped, electrocution, and exposure to refrigerant gases. HVAC units use R32 coolants which, despite their high


efficiency and low GWP (Global Warming Potential), are still composed of chlorofluorocarbons that pose several dangers to human life. Whilst leaking coolants can commonly cause difficulty breathing, headaches, nausea and vomiting, skin and eye irritation, and coughing, prolonged exposure can

lead to other life-threatening medical conditions such as asphyxiation. In addition to the risk to personnel, the loss of refrigerant


gas can cause irreversible compressor damage, making the system extremely inefficient. During a leak the system will have to work harder to compensate, which in turn will increase electricity consumption and resultingly, your monthly energy bills. According to several studies, a leaking air conditioning


unit consumes almost 20% more electricity than a fully functioning one. To put that into context, it has been suggested that a small continuous leak, left unrepaired for three months, could use an extra 10kW in electricity once the leak becomes critical. That’s equivalent to approximately £1,400 in energy bills!
