BEST SELLERS

What the retailers had to say about March 2016:

March was quite a good month for us, managing to reopen our Cockermouth shop after the December storms. Trade has been all about the higher price pointed stock and new looks. The basics haven’t worked at all yet. Customers are quite happy to pay up to £100 as long as it’s different. Softinos, Fly London, Mjus and Think! have been by far our best brands. Although the weather hasn’t been great, this customer will buy as soon as the stock comes in. I am sure the more traditional stock will start to move when the weather improves. Andrew Marshall, Strolling4Shoes Cumbria.

“Easter being so early in 2016 saw the weather cold and windy, not what we need for sandal sales. Is summer just around the corner? Last year March was hot followed by a very hot April. Are we all waiting in anticipation?” Steve White, White & Son Shoes, Sidmouth, Devon.

“On a trading situation it continues to be very fragile with footfall down on previous years due to the unseasonable weather and great lack of confidence. Some people say that we would sell no seasonal product when the weather is so cold, but with nearly 50 years of retailing experience I can assure you that it does not happen. The only way we would sell boots at this time of year, is if they were very heavily discounted but these days that is not a sure way of selling them.” Andrew Roberts, David Roberts Shoes, Llandudno, North Wales.
