FOOTWEAR FOCUS ROAD TEST
Emily Geeson kicks off summer in Mustang Boots W
ith any hint of sunshine from the English summer, we seize the opportunity to whip
out the sandals, pumps and flip flops; which is great, unless you are a boots kind of girl. As a self-confessed ‘bootaholic’, when England hits double digits our beloved winter warmers boil your feet in a bed of leather and wool. You either sacrifice your toes or embrace the summer styles. However, Mustang has brought a complete game changer for the boot girls of Britain. The German company ‘inspired by the American way of life’, is bringing new and exciting summer boots to the UK market, something which has rarely been seen before. Growing up in a German household, summer
boots are not an entirely new concept for me personally, but it’s never been something I would have considered purchasing. It’s exciting to see more styles heading to the UK, and when asked to review a pair of summer boots, I leapt at the chance. The boots I am reviewing are part of Mustang’s
2016 summer range and they follow the key conventions needed in a summer boot: light, breathable, stylish and of course, comfy. It was time to break in the Mustangs: I tend to
break in new shoes doing housework, and to be honest, the fit of the boots was near to perfect and didn’t need breaking in for very long (less housework for me!). From the outset, they were comfy in all the right places; the boot hugged the heel, which avoided painful slipping and they gripped snuggly on the ball of the foot, giving the toes freedom of movement; which on a hot day, is everything you could ask for in a boot.
14 • FOOTWEAR TODAY • MAY 2016 I must admit, silver is slightly hard to
accessorise with when it comes to my wardrobe (I live in skinny jeans, band t-shirts and boots) but after a few outfit changes, I settled on the blue denim kick-flares, white lace top, neutral cardigan and silver chain. The boots are definitely the perfect companion for denim, the iconic Mustang logo and the light summery styling complemented the blue really well.
The first run: heading out on a sunny day, the
boots were on top form. They were weightless and airy on the toes, which helped stopped my feet from swelling in the heat. Being loose around the ankles, gave me the freedom of movement, and with strategically placed, aesthetically styled air holes, more air circulated around the boots, keeping my feet cool throughout the day. As well as providing great support and fit; the heel, whilst it appears high, felt like a dream. It was solid, offering much needed stability (especially with my uncoordinated legs) and the grip on the sole was superb, and absorbed a lot of the impact whilst walking. All in all, the boots where everything you could
ask for and follow the conventions of what a summer boot should be to a ‘T’. I think it is time the UK embraced the summer boots, especially as Mustang have adopted an attractive and stylistic design concept for the market. Now we just need the summer to hurry up!
