Grown-up shoes for a grown-up wardrobe

Bryony Andrews road tests a pair of nude stiletto pumps from Austrian premium women’s shoe brand HÖGL

“ W

hat am I going to wear?!” I shrieked. I had a trade show and a conference to attend

the next day, followed by an industry awards ceremony and networking drinks that would almost certainly continue late into the night. It was going to be a long day, requiring lots of standing and possibly an outfit change, and as usual I had left planning what I was going to wear until 11pm the night before. Sadly this is not an uncommon occurrence for

me. I always seem to have an inordinate amount of things going on – I’m not complaining, mind you, I like a busy life – but how is a girl supposed to find time to shop when she’s got a full time job that includes after-work PR events, travelling to three-day trade shows, visiting clients… Not to mention family weddings, weekend breaks, and the ever-present never-ending cycle of housework? Life is complicated, and it’s more complicated when you’re a woman and you want your outfits to be simultaneously professional and fashionable. This is why my new HÖGL pumps have rapidly become a lifesaver. I have never found pumps particularly

comfortable, whether flat or high-heeled, and have therefore always gone for wedges or heels with a Mary Jane-style, across-the-foot strap. When I took my shiny, nude HÖGL stiletto pumps with their slight platform out of their box, I tried them on with some trepidation, worried that they would either flap off my heels when I walked, or overcompensate the other way and pinch my toes and the balls of my feet. As soon as I tried them on, however, they gently but firmly gripped my feet all over, creating a sense of comfort and security whilst making sure they didn’t slip off.

HÖGL’s distinctive ‘Softline’ technology is comprised of foam pillows located in the forefoot of the shoe that gently enclose toes and balls of the feet. Combined with the soft leather and flexible cut of the upper, this makes for an incredibly comfortable shoe that I can wear all day and all night with no qualms. What’s more, the shoes themselves, despite their durability, are remarkably light-weight; no ungainly clip-clopping in these stilettos. As I have entered the ‘world of work’, my

wardrobe staples have steadily evolved to feature classic pieces that flatter each other and flatter me. My favourite items make me feel comfortable and elegant, and the HÖGL pumps fit right in. With a three and a half inch heel and a small platform, they give me enough height for a bit of authority but are still manageable for a long working day. Their versatile colour and simple, timeless style puts them up there with the Burberry trench coat and the Mulberry handbag in the modern woman’s professional wardrobe – they not only go with everything, they give the rest of the outfit an injection of class. In the modern workplace, and in particular in media where I work, the distinction between work clothes and casual clothes is shrinking. Trouser suits and pencil skirts are seen less and less often, replaced with things like black straight leg jeans, blouses and brogues. The HÖGL pumps fit perfectly with this trend, combining just the right level of playful and professional. A movement dubbed ‘New Minimalism’ by

designers and fashion journos is growing in popularity, based around the idea of buying less, but buying better. Although perhaps not a novel

idea to my mother’s generation, who are used to buying items designed to last, this move away from rampant consumerism and towards more thoughtful buying habits is a relatively new concept for millennials. However it is a trend that they are embracing, which is why brands like HÖGL increasingly appeal to a multi-generational consumer base, HÖGL, a traditional family enterprise launched by Josef Högl in 1935, is founded on an ethic of fine artisan crafting. The brand asserts that, “over the last eight decades of production, classical elegance and superior quality have became the hallmarks of our brand.” Their shoes are fashionable and feminine, modern and contemporary. Equally important, however, they are designed to support women, both physically and professionally. The specially in-built features of my pumps ensure that I can wear them for hours without fear of discomfort. And their sophisticated aesthetic means they are a confidence-booster no matter the outfit or occasion.
