Integrating learning and work: how to make it happen


Laura Overton discusses the results from recent research on how learning in the workplace can be improved


As L&D prepares for the future of learning, we are surrounded by new opportunities to help us do that: mobile learning, social learning, microlearning, games, and even augmented reality are all hot stuff right now. These tools lure us with the promise of making all our dreams of delivering and supporting learning at any time or place come true. In turn, this will enable us to arrive like a knight in shining armour ready to help out where our staff need us. It’s a heady promise. In this year’s Towards Maturity Benchmark, 93 per cent of 600 L&D leaders said that they want to integrate learning and work – up from 80 per cent last year. What’s more, 98 per cent want to play a part in increasing the sharing of good practice in the workplace.

Technology alone is not working It’s clear that we are turning to technology to deliver – video is going strong this year, with seven out of 10 currently using it to capture and share effective practices within their organisation. Mobile devices and social sites are now more available, but are not being exploited by L&D to their full capacity. Four out of five L&D leaders are now using some form of mobile device to support learning. However, only 18 per cent are using apps to support performance at the point of need. 86 per cent say their staff can now
