Zebras Finally Caught! After four months roaming the suburbs of
Prince George’s County and eluding recapture, the two remaining loose zebras that escaped from an exotic animal park were fi nally cap- tured on December 13. T e two escapees were part of a trio that got
loose from Jerry Holly’s property in Upper Marlboro on August 11. One of the zebras died a month after the escape when it was trapped in an illegal snare on a neighboring property that is owned by the Girl Scouts. T e Girl Scouts issued a statement saying the illegal snare trap was placed by an “unauthorized trespasser.” During the whole ordeal, PG County an- nounced in mid-October that a second dead zebra was found on Holly’s property. T e Ani- mal Service Division in PG County fi led three counts of criminal animal cruelty charges against Holly on October 19. Holly, who also has an ex- otic animal farm in Florida, was found guilty in 2016 of possession of captive wild animals with- out a permit. In addition, he was fi ned in 2013 for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. According to Richard Bell, a spokesman for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspec- tion Service, Holly does have the appropriate license for the zebras in Maryland.
Another Great Book Suggestion We missed a book last month in our holiday
gift guide! T e Magic of Horses is a collection of essays about life-changing equines complied by Nina H. Gardner, MD, of Pennsylvania and edited by Maryland’s own Joe Clancy. Clancy
is a 2015 Touch of Class winner, presented by the Maryland Horse Indus- try Board, for his Eclipse Award-winning story about California Chrome’s Preakness win. He also is the editor of Mid-Atlantic T oroughbred magazine.
T e essays in T e Magic of Horses are writ-
ten by some of the world’s leading equestrians, plus a few not as famous, and revolve around a single horse that changed that person’s life. Readers will recognize such legendary horses as Senior Senator, Grinding Speed and Saluter. Many of the essays are penned by Maryland horsemen like U.S. Eventing Association’s CEO Rob Burk and Maryland Horse Indus- try Board’s Executive Director Ross Peddicord while Captain Mark Phillips adds his own in- ternational story. Gardner and Clancy each add their own essays as well. Altogether, the collection of essays creates a deep dive into what we all love about horses... the way they touch our souls. A great read for any horse enthusiast, especially those with eventing and steeplechase interests. Proceeds
Over 600 people visited the Greenwell
Foundation Barn at Greenwell State Park in Hollywood on December 4 for its fourth an- nual Holiday Horse Open House. “Proceeds from the event, and from gifts given by our generous Friends of the Holiday Horse, are used for the care and feeding of our Hero Herd of Horses and Ponies,” said Greenwell’s Executive Director Jolanda Campbell. Greenwell’s second annual Drive T ru Hol-
iday Horse Event preceded the open house. On December 2, guests with disabilities and those medically at-risk, drive through the park while staff and horses line the driveway dressed in holiday outfi ts. “We started this event last year when we couldn’t host the Holiday Horse Open House at the barn and it was so successful, we realized that we needed to continue it for our many neighbors and friends who weren’t able to attend the larger event,” explained board member Frannie Bostich.

Applications Open for new MHIB Discovery Centers
T e Maryland Horse Industry Board is look-
ing for more equine facilities to join its network of Horse Discovery Centers (HDC). HDCs off er programs to the general public that are ei- ther free or have minimal fees to help introduce more people to the horse industry in Maryland. T ere are currently 38 stables as part of the HDC network. Stables must be licensed through MHIB
and off er tours, demonstrations, educational program and/or other riding experiences to in- dividuals or groups that have never, or rarely, been exposed to horses in person. T e HDC program highlights those licensed stables who have gone beyond the basic minimal standards for licensing and stepped up to become a certi- fi ed facility. Applications can be found at https://mda.
maryland.gov/horseboard/Pages/Horse_Dis- covery_Centers.aspx. T e deadline to apply is January 20. Questions and applications can be sent to Anne Litz at
