HeadCheck Health for Maryland Jockeys

In December 2019, the Maryland T orough-

bred Horsemen’s Association, Delaware Jock- eys Health and Welfare Fund and MedStar Health formed a new partnership with the soft- ware company HeadCheck Health to launch an industry-specifi c electronic injury tracking system with a focus on optimizing concussion safety and medical care at racetracks. To improve the level of care jockeys receive,

MedStar Health has used their experience with professional sports teams to create the Horse- men’s Health System. T e service included the development and implementation of a sport-

specifi c concussion protocol and return-to-ride protocol for any jockey who sustains a suspect- ed concussion. HeadCheck is a se-

In the case of a suspected concus- sion, track staff can re- port the incident and collect information needed to help medi- cal professionals make a better evidence-based diagnosis. T e pilot program was launched on Novem- ber 22, 2019, at Laurel Park under the direction of Dr. Kelly Ryan of MedStar Health who is also the Medical Director of the Horsemen’s Health System at Maryland tracks.
