Maryland Will Miss...
Former Standardbred track veterinarian Mark John Ricigliano died on May 14. Dr. Ricigliano grew up in New York and earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Bologna in Italy. After graduat- ing in 1985, he moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and opened his own equine veteri- nary practice. He specialized in Standardbreds and was one of the primary vets at Rosecroft Raceway for more than 20 years. Later in life, he was the owner and CEO of Atlantic Media and Lightwave Communications and in the 2000s, he became the founder and director of Adera BioOncology, which develops assays and companion diagnostics for pancreatic cancer. Dr. Shawna Lea Chastain of Sachse, TX died on May 23 at the age of 40. She grew up in Maryland, graduating from Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring. Dr. Chastain bred Rhodesian Ridgebacks and loved riding horses. Edgar E. Black, Jr. of Shepherdstown, WV died on March 8. He was 82. Born in Hager- stown, Black was an active jouster and was in- ducted into the National Jousting Hall of Fame. He rode under the title of Knight of Old Glory. Douglas W. Verzi of Baltimore, 78, died on
March 31. Verzi was the former owner of Ma- donna Auto Sales and Service and Farmington Nurseries. He retired to the family farm where he enjoyed riding horses. George Edward Lechlider died on June 6. He was 96. Lechlider was the president of the
Montgomery County Farm Bureau for 50 years as well as a 4-H leader for that same amount of time. He was the superintendent of the Swine Department of the Montgomery County Fair since 1949 and was one of the pioneers of the fair. Betty Ann Weintraub of Chevy Chase died on May 29. She and her husband Dr. Alan Weintraub owned East Oaks in Poolesville. Bet- ty was a member of the Potomac Hunt and Alan was an active carriage driver. Betty was born in New Jersey and met Alan at Syracuse University, where she graduated in 1951. T ey were married in 1952. T e family moved to East Oaks in 1980 where Betty managed the horse and cattle farm. In 2006, they moved to the Eastern Shore and later retired to Chevy Chase. Pharmacist Philip Edward Fisher of Berlin died on June 5. After retiring as the owner and operator of Fisher’s Pharmacy in Ocean City, he became a certifi ed equine massage therapist and founded Phil’s Equine Massage. T e World War II Coast Guard vet became heavily involved with the rescue Horse Lovers United, Ltd. T oroughbred breeder Warren R. Dempsey,
III, died on June 1 in Aiken, SC. Formerly of Monkton, he was 71 at the time of his death. Dempsey graduated from Baltimore Polytech- nic Institute in 1963 where he played varsity lacrosse and was the quarterback of the football team. He attended West Point from 1963 to 1966 but left before graduating to join the fam- ily business. He enlisted in the Special Forces
unit of the Maryland National Guard, gradu- ating from Offi cer Candidate School in 1967 and being commissioned as a lieutenant. After completing infantry offi cers training as well as Airborne and Rangers schools, he joined the 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, NC and volunteered for the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969. For his service, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. In 1971, he graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a bach- elor’s degree in fi nance. He established his own business as a hedge fund manager through Choptank Capital, Inter Ocean Capital and Meadwood Partners, where he was still work- ing at the time of his death. After marrying his second wife Karen Somerville, the couple moved to Reveille Farm in Monkton in 1992. T ere they established an active breeding farm for both fl at track and steeplechase horses. Two of their most notable horses were Soaringover- seattle, trained by the late Tom Voss, and War Talk, trained by Jonathan Sheppard. Dempsey had been a member of the advisory council for the National Steeplechase Racing Hall of Fame Museum and the Aiken T oroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. He was a former treasurer for the National Steeplechase Asso- ciation and a member of the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club.
