Jockey Javier Castellano after winning the Preak- ness Stakes aboard Cloud Computing


Longtime track photographer Jim McCue earned the 2017 Special Award of Merit, which is presented by the Maryland Jockey Club during the Alibi Breakfast to those who have made a positive impact on the racing industry. McCue retired this year after 48 years in the job, documenting four Triple Crown winners.


Maryland jockey Trevor McCarthy earned his 1,000th career victory during the opening weekend of the Preakness Meet. The win came aboard Ex- pect a Kitten on May 14.


Cloud Computing, owned by Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence, won the Preakness Stakes by a nose over Classic Empire, giving trainer Chad Brown his fi rst win in a Triple Crown race and jock- ey Javier Castellano his second Preakness win.


Pimlico’s infi eld was packed with fans watching Sam Hunt perform right before the Preakness Stakes. The day brought a record crowd of over 140,000 people and also set a new race day handle record of $97,168,658.

Westminster jockey Nik Juarez piloted Gary and Mary West’s Actress to win the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for trainer Jason Servis. Juarez told the Bal- timore Sun, “for me to win that, being at home, it was one of the most heartfelt races I’ve ever won just because my family and myself being from Maryland.” This year’s BESD broke records for both attendance and handle.

Happy Mesa, based at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton and trained by Graham Motion, won the $100,000 Hilltop on Black-Eyed Susan Day. Javier Castellano was in the irons for owners Great Point Stables LLC, Highclare America, Zoom and Flash Stables Inc. and Charlie Spirling.
