Sow seeds in a rich, well-drained soil and thin to 12 in. apart. For best results start indoors 10 to 12 weeks before outdoor planting so that seedlings are large enough when ready to plant out. Cooler temperatures may cause bolting.
Plant indoors 1/4 in. deep about 6 weeks before transplanting out- doors. Put into Jiffy pots when plants are about 2 in. high. Or, sow seed directly as soon as soil can be worked. Tie heads for best blanching. One oz. produces about 1,500 plants.

Celeriac requires good soil preparation and regular watering to develop a good quality root. Seeds are slow to germinate and should be start- ed indoors if possible.
