“WHAT SETS US apart from other universities is our investment in people,” says Jenny Share, Secretary and Registrar at Leeds Beckett University. “We define staff and stakeholders as customer groups, but students are our main customers and we put them at the heart of everything we do.” Leeds Beckett University, formerly Leeds Metropolitan University, is the
only university in the UK to hold both the Government’s Customer Service Excellence (CSE) standard and an “Investors in People” Gold standard. The CSE standard is awarded to public sector bodies that demonstrate a commitment to driving customer-focused change. The Investors in People Gold standard has a similar ethos, “but with that our main customer group is our staff”, says Share. The success of the university’s customer-focused approach is good news, not only for its 32,000 students (some 3,000 of whom are postgraduates), but also for its 3,000 employees. The university’s four faculties—arts, environment and technology; business and law; health and social sciences; and the Carnegie Faculty— deliver 150 postgraduate and professionally accredited courses that focus on health, sport, active lifestyles, retail, tourism, hospitality, arts and social research. The recently launched Leadership Centre, which sits within the Faculty of Business and Law, offers professional and academic qualifications, research and services to business, and leadership programmes. The university is split between two main campuses. City Campus is
located in the heart of Leeds. Just under three miles away, amid 100 acres of parkland, lies Headingley Campus and its historical buildings. The Carnegie Pavilion—where events, tourism and hospitality courses are taught—is located nearby at the famous Headingley Carnegie Stadium, home of the city’s rugby and cricket clubs.
INVESTING IN FACILITIES Leeds Beckett University continually invests in its facilities and, in 2012, a £1 million clinical-skills suite opened in its city centre site. There, students studying courses such as nursing and physiotherapy use specialist equipment in purpose-built rooms. The university also houses sports- science labs, film studios and performance spaces. The outstanding facilities and premises—including the university library, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and was reaccredited for its Customer Service Excellence—have helped earn the university its coveted
CSE award. The assessor identified 14 areas of strength in all, including corporate commitment, safeguarding of students, a neighbourhood helpline and employability. The university is particularly proud of the professional focus of its courses—all are developed in conjunction with employers—and the resultant employability of its students.
INVESTING IN PEOPLE The Investors in People Gold Standard, achieved by Leeds Beckett University, takes into account all aspects of an organisation’s employment practice, including reward, involvement and development. This demonstrates the university’s commitment to a high-quality staff experience and is no small achievement considering that the university is one of the most significant employers in the region, contributing £475 million to the economy. Leeds Beckett University strives for excellence in everything it does, and
research is no exception. Within its three research institutes—health and well-being; sport, physical activity and leisure; and the Leeds Sustainability Institute—the university focuses on practical, real-world research that makes a difference to people’s everyday lives. Boasting cutting-edge research, professional courses and exceptional
facilities, Leeds Beckett University has plenty to offer anyone interested in furthering their studies, boosting their business growth, or upskilling their staff—whatever kind of customer they are.
