driven by the need to comply with ISO 20022 by October 2016. With most corpo- rates, particularly small and medium-sized, there will be a lot of work on all fronts. ‘So it is a very short time to get GPP up and running and for the clients to change their file formats,’ says Gibson Lundmark. ‘At best it will be six months and the business is really on our backs.’ The international corporates want one way to communicate with all of their banks, she adds, but the challenge will be the mid-tier and small corporates as they don’t see the benefit of ‘just’ changing a file format. The Baltic operations are expected to

constitute the second phase of the project. Before embarking on the implementation, there was a full selection spanning more than six months, centred on an RFI and RFP. Although Fundtech was the incum- bent, the bank considered all mainstream options. The shortlist is believed to have come down to Fundtech or Clear2Pay, although the bank declines to comment. There was a good relationship with

Fundtech and the rules-based nature of GPP was an attraction, with the ability for the bank to make its own changes. GPP was the clear favourite not only of the business but also of the IT department, which felt that the four-layered architec- ture was clean and would aid future main- tenance. Customisation is being kept to a minimum and the emphasis is on simplici-

ty so, for instance, Swedbank will not seek to add any new payments products within the initial implementation. In fact, overall, the aim is to end up with fewer products, not more, so that it can be as efficient as possible. The bank is largely managing the pro-

ject itself. ‘We could have used third par- ties but we felt that they did not have the knowledge to help where we are weak, which is in the nitty-gritty detail,’ says Tan- neryd. When it comes to how a mass pay- ment file works in Sweden at present and how it will work in the future, for instance, this is really knowledge that is only in the bank. The payments area should function in much the same way after the GPP imple- mentation as before. So, for much of the bank, the heavy investment is not going to produce a lot of demonstrable value. An app is much more tangible, points out Gibson Lundmark. However, ultimately it is expected that between 15 and 20 systems will be shut down, bringing reduced costs, improved automation, a consistent service across all countries, and ease of mainte- nance, plus the ISO 20022 capability. It might not be ‘sexy’ but at least,

fourth time around, there can be no doubts that the project is of fundamental importance, underpinning the bank’s day- to-day business as well as providing the foundation for the front-end innovations.
