18 IN BRIEF
NEWS
Barclays is trailing Amazon delivery lockers in some of its London branches, enabling
the e-tailer’s customers to pick up packages. If successful, the bank could extend this across its UK network. Amazon already has hundreds of Click and Collect sites around the country, teaming up with the likes of the Post Office and companies like Doddle, but the Barclays scheme represents the first time it has used bank branches.
The initiative is part of an effort by Barclays to keep its High Street presence relevant in a digital world. Branch banking is shrinking across the UK, as customers shift online. Around 2,400 branches could close over the next five years, taking the total number of High Street sites to below 7,500, according to McKinsey research.
