IBS Journal May 2016 IN BRIEF Orange and Groupama have wrapped up

discussions, ongoing since January, which pave the way for the acquisition by Orange of a 65% stake in Groupama Banque.

Groupama will retain the remaining 35%. As a result, a mobile banking service, with Groupama Bank becoming Orange Bank, will be launched

in France during early 2017, offering current accounts, savings, loans and insurance services, and payments. The aim is to attract over two million customers in the country.

Thierry Martel, CEO of Groupama, comments: “This partnership will enable us to leverage Orange’s technical know-how and its expertise in digital services to accelerate our existing online banking activity. We are effectively combining two powerful and complimentary brands in order to offer our customers a disruptive banking service. We are aiming to put the High Street bank into our customers’ pockets, turning tomorrow’s bank into today’s reality.”

Google Wallet Card put out to pasture

support its Wallet Card from 30 June onwards, giving the spluttering prepaid card a fitting low-key send-off. It was launched way back in November 2013, allowing users to pay for goods and services in person and online using the balance held in their Google Wallet. It was usable at any retailer that accepted MasterCard.

Google came up with the card due to restrictions at the time stopping the company from creating an NFC-enabled mobile payments solution. Google Wallet is still alive in app form, as a peer-to-peer payments rival to Venmo and Square Cash. Those with the cards can still activate and use them until the cut-off date in June but will no longer be able to add money to the account via debit card or bank account.

Google Wallet is being stripped down in the wake of Android Pay’s launch. The new service has become the company’s flagship payments offering and renders the idea

of a prepaid card moot.

“After careful consideration,” writes Google in an email to Wallet users. “We’ve decided we’ll no longer support the Wallet card as of 30 June. Moving forward, we want to focus on making it easier than ever to send and receive money with the Google Wallet app. As we wind down support for the Wallet card, we’re excited to continue enhancing Google Wallet to give you the best possible experience when paying friends and family.”

Alex Hamilton oogle has announced that it will no longer
