President’s
ARA Officers
Comments By Ricky Young, ARA President Association Work Around the Country and Canada
It’s the beginning of summer, and there are more hot topics ahead than just the weather! A hur-
ricane of controversy continues to swirl around the Takata airbag issue, and ARA is on the front- lines representing the interests of automotive recyclers. With the recently expanded, recall, ARA again recommends that its members take steps to ensure that these defective and potentially lethal airbags are not sold for use in vehicles. There has been some positive forward movement on Capitol Hill in the quest to obtain OEM part numbers and build sheets from automotive manufacturers. It is critical that we have access to this information –not only for the growth of our businesses and industry but for the safety and well- being of the motoring consumer!
Another hot item this summer is cores and commodities. Certain products in your inventory may have additional value if they can be reclassified as a commodity. The first in a series of articles on this very profitable topic appears in this issue. Recently, ARA CEO Michael Wilson and I attended the annual convention of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. During the week of the convention, ISRI Chairman Doug Kramer and I had a very productive meeting where we agreed that our respective organizations should work cooperatively on matters which are beneficial to both groups. Many thanks to Steve Levetan of Pull-A-Part for his efforts on behalf of the ARA while we were in Vancouver.
Michael and I also made a trip to Dallas, Texas in order to tour Copart headquarters and meet with the company’s top officials. The exchange of ideas and information during this meeting was really extraordinary, and both groups came away with a greater understanding of the issues and concerns of the other. Special thanks to Copart VP Jeff Holder for arranging the meeting and Copart COO Sean Eldridge and his team for taking the day to meet with us. I would like to thank ARA VP Mike Swift and his lovely wife Tracy for their great hospitality dur- ing my trip to the Iowa Automotive Recyclers (IARA) Summer Outing in Des Moines. Our Iowa members make up one of the most active affiliates in the IARA family. A special lifetime achieve- ment award was presented to Mr. John Vander Haag, founder of IARA, a past-president of the ARA, and truly one of the giants of our industry. On a personal note, it was a real honor for me to meet Mr. Vander Haag, his wife Ruth, and their family. Congratulations to IARA President Andy Wilken and IARA Executive Director Sue Schauls for putting on a tremendous event. I’d like to invite everyone to join me on my upcoming President’s Trip to San Francisco, CA. It is scheduled to coincide with the SCADA conference beginning on September 17th. Come early and participate in the educational sessions, a tour of Schnitzer’s Megashredder, and the SCADA Tradeshow. Or, if you can’t be away from your office that long, arrive on September 20th as we kick off the President’s Trip with an evening reception. On Monday, we’ll tour Monterey and Carmel -– visiting many of the great sights along the beautiful Pacific coastline. And on Tuesday, we’ll set out for a day tour to Sonoma and the Napa Valley Wine Country.
Additional details, hotel information, and the form to register can be found in the July/August
issue of Automotive Recycling magazine. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the amazing sights in and around San Francisco while enjoying time and making treasured memories with your fel- low ARA colleagues. Don’t miss out on this fun, affordable trip!
I would encourage all of our eligible members to make personal donations to the ARA Political Action Committee (ARAPAC). It is critical that we be fully engaged with key decision makers in Washington, DC to ensure that the interests and concerns of automotive recyclers are heard – and heard loudly! Our ARAPAC Chairman, Greg Bender of Ohio, has been working diligently to build up this fund, but we are still well short of the amounts needed to fully pursue our goals. There just isn’t enough space here to thank everyone who has stepped up to make this such a great year so far! Without the active support of so many of our members, ARA could not be near- ly as productive. I do need to extend special thanks to the Board of Directors, the members of the Executive Committee, and the ARA Staff for all of their hard work. Remember, if you’re not involved, get involved! Lastly, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of former ARA President Randy Reitman. It has been my great honor and privilege to work with Randy over the years. It’s likely I would have never met Randy except through our mutual participation in ARA, and I count myself very lucky to have known such an esteemed colleague and more importantly to have been one of his many friends.
Sincerely, Ricky Young, ARA President 2014-2015
