Process Control Standards Update: An ICI Strategic Initiative


Mission Statement for ICI Process Control Standards (PCS)


Our mission is to create a global standard for the use of process control methods to further enhance the investment casting industry while consistently meeting the customer’s expectations.

he following is an update on Process Control Standards since the article in July 2016 issue of


INCAST. The PCS core team has met 4 times since the last update. Also, an update was presented at ICI 63rd Technical Conference at Columbus, Ohio. They have added a new member of the core team. Mr. Thad Nykiel of Bescast, Inc. is now part of the core team.

The standard shall be written in the form of process control elements and tools which would


comprise a complete


process control system in an investment casting company. Foundries would derive numerous benefits through the use of these elements and tools, guiding their journey towards better process control. The standard would provide a common language for IC foundries to engage help from each other, from suppliers or from other industry resources.

Standardization of PC Levels The creation of the standard along with certified audits would allow IC customers to easily evaluate the level of process control employed by their investment casting


suppliers. Communication


through third party certification benefits the foundry by adding credibility to their marketing efforts, while reducing customer research and audit costs.


Standard Measurement of PC Levels The creation of a standard would provide the ICI and other participating associations with a platform for formal audit and foundry certification, similar to that of ISO or NADCAP. The certification process would assess the degree to which a member has achieved process control in their foundry, which would be identified by a rating system, such as bronze, silver, and gold, communicating audit results. ICI auditor training would increase the resource pool of people in the industry for supporting foundries wishing to advance in process control. Members benefit through an independent evaluation of their progress towards advanced process control.


Global Participation An international core strategy team consisting of members from North America, Europe and Asia. Executive directors from each major association are invited to join the core strategy team. Each geographical/regional area will have their own working committee. Working committees shall provide bi- annual updates to the international core strategy team.

• Define how to coordinate the relationship, assistance and commonality within the regional efforts
