Universal dominates BRITs noms as Adele boosts indies

JAMES BAY, YEARS & YEARS, CALVIN HARRIS, JESS GLYNNE ALSO UP FOR MULTIPLE GONGS

LABELS ■ BY MARK SUTHERLAND

U

niversal Music had one of its most successful ever years in the 2016 BRIT Awards nominations, scooping 29 out of a possible 63 available artist slots – a 46.03% market share. That’s considerably up on the major’s 34.9% share of the nominations last year, as Virgin EMI’s James Bay and Polydor’s Years & Years both secured four nominations each, and Island scooped 10 nods.

A jubilant David Joseph, chairman/CEO, Universal Music UK, told Music Week: “I’m incredibly proud that 22 Universal artists have received nominations, an achievement which reflects a year which has seen success come from every part of our business.” Virgin/EMI president Ted Cockle hailed Bay – up for British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Single (for Hold Back The River) and Mastercard British Album (for Chaos And The Calm) – as “wholly British, wholly talented and wholly an album-maker of quite some pedigree. Plus he’s sold a million singles, so we’re delighted that Mr Bay has scooped a

David Joseph, Ted Cockle and Ben Beardsworth sizeable four nominations.”

On the subject of Years & Years – nominated for Single, Breakthrough, British Group and British Artist Video Of The Year – Polydor president Ferdy Unger-Hamilton said “a whirlwind year” for the group had been “topped off by the industry recognising what the band have achieved”. Sony finished second with 11 nominations, a 17.46% share, down from 31.7% last year, although Columbia’s artist Mark Ronson – nominated for Male Solo – also picked up a British Producer nod. Columbia’s Calvin Harris was nominated three times and, in a significant breakthrough for an X Factor act, Syco’s Little Mix scored two nominations.

Warner Music had nine nominations in the list for a 14.29% share, down from 23.8% last year. Atlantic’s Jess Glynne was nominated three times, although her I Cry When I Laugh record was not shortlisted for Album, despite being

2015’s biggest-selling debut record. Coldplay are in contention for the Album award (for A Head Full Of Dreams) as well as British Group and Miles Leonard, chairman of Warner Bros. and Parlophone Records UK noted this “recognises the strength of this album, having only been released a few weeks ago to huge acclaim”. With Blur and Foals also nominated, he represents three acts on the Group shortlist, which he said was “a reflection on both Parlophone’s and WB’s artist roster”. XL Beggars were the big gainers this year thanks to Jamie xx’s two nominations (Male Solo, Album) and Adele’s four (Female Solo, Album, Single, Video). Adele also looks a sure thing for the Global Success Award.

Ben Beardsworth, managing director, XL Recordings told Music Week: “Our mission is to put out great albums, so we are extremely proud to be involved with two of the Best British Album nominees this year.”

XL Beggars scored a 9.52% share on its own, while the indies combined took 22.22%, significantly up on last year’s 9.5%. The winners will be announced at the 2016 BRIT Awards ceremony, to be held at London’s The O2 Arena on February 24.
