NEW reissues / catalogue albums JIMMY CLIFF• Jimmy Cliff (Island/Caroline CAROLR 26CD)

A prolific singles artist in his native Jamaica from the age of 14, Jimmy Cliff made his

international breakthrough with his seminal, eponymous debut album for Island in 1969, at the age of 21. One of the first reggae albums to make a splash globally to that point, it has been out of print for some time, but now reappears in this much-expanded edition, on which the original 11 tracks are supplemented by a further 16. Among them are Cliff’s maiden hit, Wonderful World, Beautiful People - a vibrant, self- penned track with an excellent Leslie Kong production and a pleasing string arrangement - and the protest song Vietnam. Although not hits for Cliff, his original versions of Many Rivers

To Cross and The Harder They Come - later to be major chart singles for UB40 and Rocker’s Revenge - are definitive. Also present are Let Your Yeah Be Yeah and You Can Get It If You Really Want It, Cliff songs that went on to be hits for contemporaneous Jamaican acts The Pioneers and Desmond Dekker.

NANCY WILSON • Today My Way/ Nancy Naturally

(Soul Music/Caroline CAROLR 009CD)

Still active as she nears 80, Nancy Wilson has had an extremely long and productive career,

most notably between 1962 and 1969, when she released no fewer than 25 studio albums on Capitol, all of which made the US charts. Two of those albums - 1965’s Today My Way and the following year’s Nancy Naturally - are

now squeezed onto a single CD alongside six bonus tracks, all in their original mono versions. Wilson’s exquisite phrasing, and her ability to straddle the jazz/ soul divide both serve her well. Nancy Naturally finds her in a more traditional big band setting, providing her unique take on well worn classics like Since I Fell For You, Willow Weep For Me and Alright, Okay, You Win.

THE LOVE AFFAIR/STEVE ELLIS • Time Hasn’t Changed Us - The Complete CBS Recordings 1967-1971 (RPM RPMBXM 526)

Fronted by the precociously talented 16-year- old Steve Ellis, The Love Affair hit the

ground running in 1966 when they scored a trio of Top 10 hits, including their introductory chart-topper Everlasting Love. A

song of such pedigree that it has subsequently charted for a further seven artists, most recently for Jamie Cullum in 2004, Everlasting Love opens this excellent 3 CD, 67 song set which anthologises not just the entire Love Affair canon prior to their 1970 split, but also songs intended for Ellis’ aborted debut solo album. Love Affair hits Rainbow Valley, A Day Without Love, One Road and Bringing On Back The Good Times are all deliciously melodic commercial pop of the highest pedigree, and even their flips - most notably the melancholic Gone Are The Songs Of Yesterday - are eminently listenable. Rarities exclusive to the release include BBC sessions of All Along The Watchtower and A Day In The Life, and Italian versions of a couple of the hits. Detailed liner notes, punctuated by quotes from Ellis, complete an excellent package.
