Blinding Lights’ year: (L-R) The Weeknd had the year’s biggest single, while Billie Eilish had the highest-ranked album of the year by an international artist

accelerated by Covid.” Allen acknowledges that it’s been “very tough” for physical

retailers. But indie record shops and HMV were quick to move online, which helped vinyl record another bumper year of growth – up 11.5% to 4.8 million units – amid an overall physical decline of 24.6% to 21.1m units. The execs suspect the format was helped by lockdown. “I think people were spending more time at home and

investing in a turntable,” says Wood. “With people being at home, vinyl is certainly one of things people have turned to for pleasure and enjoyment,” adds Hawkes. “So it doesn’t surprise me at all that the magic of vinyl has played a big part this year.” While Q4 vinyl sales were up 25% year-on-year, CD sales slumped by 26.5% during the same period. The full year decline in CD sales was 31.7%. On those trends, the compact disc will become the niche format within a few years. Does it have a future? “On CDs, we’re absolutely committed to the format

and we continue to release albums across all formats, and whether it’s from an indie or our own stores, we continue to see demand for the CD format,” insists Hawkes. Sony’s big Q4 was partly fuelled by CD sales for albums

by AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen and Little Mix. While the quarter is traditionally more physical, it’s down from a 24.6% share in Q4 2019 to 18.3% in Q4 2020. Five years ago, it was 34.5%.

“We’re certainly committed to [CD],” says Wood.

“You have people who are still wedded to it, whether they be really casual consumers, audiophiles or committed fans of acts. So we’re still seeing good numbers in the first week. But thereafter, the numbers trail off.” Allen expects volumes for CDs to be “significantly reduced”

in the years ahead. And supermarkets’ ongoing support for the format will be key for its future. “Music and entertainment in general, probably with the

exception of games, has been very tough for them,” he says. “Looking at the declines year-on-year, they’re quite heavy in that sector. So it will be interesting to see how they approach it going forward.” Despite that uncertain prognosis for physical music – and

who knows how Brexit could affect vinyl supplies? – Allen remains upbeat about the overall performance in 2020. “It’s got to be one of the most dynamic industries,

just in terms of the way it’s constantly evolving,” says Allen. “With new players coming into the market and technology changing consumption, it’s an exciting time. And then if you throw a global pandemic into the mix, you could hardly call this job boring.”
