Judging from the number of awards, hon- ors and encomia it has received, Peter Jackson’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is widely admired as a remarkable and compelling achievement of fan- tastic cinema. While some aficionados applaud the fact that the films have revived interest in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, others have expressed hesitations about Jackson’s many omissions and alterations of Tolkien’s source novel, pejoratively understood as “liberties.” Though enthusiasts may assume that Jackson’s adaptation is “definitive,” it is not; rather, his is what might be called a dark inter- pretation of the material. Tolkien’s narrative strat- egy in THE LORD OF THE RINGS is to alternate
