MacQueen points out in his annotations, the ab­ breviated running time of LCJMI’s restoration ren­ dered any adherence to the 1925 cue sheets impossible, and “with the exception of one song, the entire 1925 music score [credited to James Bradford] was a compilation of preexisting com­ positions from a variety of venues.” Lumivision’s laserdisc and DVD presentations offer both the


musical score and music with sound effects on separate tracks, making full use of the Dolby Digi­ tal Stereo potential; Milestone’s VHS edition of­ fers Miller’s score with effects. Miller’s score is engaging and memorable, enchanting on its own terms while enhancing the onscreen drama, pa­ thos, and suspense, but the sound effects are rela­ tively effective and unobtrusive. All three formats of LUMI of­


fer the original theatrical trailer (running 3m 13s), which includes five shots which did not appear in the Kodascope edition, and “THE LOST WORLD: Missing Scenes,” a selection of produc­ tion stills (with text commentary by MacQueen) chronicling the missing footage. This includes sequences that, some sources claim, were never filmed. Mac- Queen’s documentation here is persuasive, though, and nicely presented. (A curious note: in the shot of Conan Doyle at his writ­ ing desk, the VHS misidentifies producer Watterson Rothacker as “director Harry Hoyt” ; the la­ ser and DVD correct this error.) This feature can be stepped through on the laserdisc and DVD, while it unreels on the VHS edition at a length of 9m 15s. The step-through “THE LOST WORLD: Production” extra (run­ ning 4m 40s on VHS) offers be­ hind-the-scenes shots (familiar to veteran FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND readers) of makeup man Cecil Holland preparing Bull Montana for his Apeman role; as noted in both LCJMI and IMG annotations and/or commentary, Holland had previously created a similar makeup job for Mon­ tana’s role in First National’s GO AND GET IT (1920), which was coincidentally also scripted by LOST WORLD adaptor Marion Fairfax. This feature concludes with complete sheet music for the amusingly vapid song “The
