reflects the intent of the original theatrical ver sion, however out-of-place it may seem. 2m of all-new footage elaborates on Paula,

Malone, and Roxton’s exploration of the caves, and the amusing sequence in which Challenger and Summerlee test a catapult Challenger has constructed from sap ling trees (55:27-57:37). Arguing over the nature of the arc the catapult will create, Summerlee is accidentally vaulted through the air and into a pond, startling a Tri- ceratops. In the caves, Roxton dodges the first

fiery evidence of the volcanic activity to come. Chapter 12, 59:18-1:00:22 offers a slightly

different edit of the scene which cross-cuts be tween Paula, Roxton, and Malone in the caves, and Challenger and Summerlee’s stalking of the Brontosaurus up to its cliffside battle with an Allosaurus. IMG also breaks up Challenger’s dia logue, “A lovely specimen! We’ll stalk it and ob serve its habits!” into two intertitles. In LÜMI, the scene of the two scientists fol

lowing the dinosaur follows the entire sequence in which Roxton finds the cavern exit from the plateau, and talks with Austin and Zambo at base camp below, and Roxton and Paula’s dialogue after Malone leaves the cave. In IMG, this revised cross cutting concludes with Roxton telling Paula about finding her father’s remains, followed by a shot of the Brontosaurus at the cliffside. IMG offers an ex

tended animation shot of the Brontosaurus, lingering over the el egant serpentine move ment of its neck. There is a slightly extended solo shot of the Allo saurus as it approaches and pauses, a full-figure reaction shot of the Brontosaurus before the Allosaurus enters the frame, and a new insert closeup shot of Challenger raising his

hand to his throat in amazement. Unfortunately, the shot of the Brontosaurus

model plunging into the swamp at the base of the cliff is truncated; the model is no longer visible

at all, missing its first few frames before the splash at water-level. This footage is complete in all prior versions.

egment Five opens, in most versions, with

the first shot of the now-active volcano (revised in IMG, as noted below), continuing to the conclu sion of the South American portion of the film. This sequence lasts 7m 56s in GT, 10m 6s in LUMI, and an eye-popping 15m 30s in IMG, which boasts some of the liveliest rediscovered special effects footage. These revisions and additions in IMG include: The new material begins immediately with

Chapter 13, bridging the shot of the mired but alive Brontosaurus at a fade-in to a close- up of Paula with a lit candle, holding vigil at her father’s cavern grave. A lone side- profile shot of Paula is all that remains of her prayer over her father’s remains, a sequence praised by reviewers at the time. A full lm of new footage at the base of the

the base of the plateau with

plateau introduces the Brazilian Geodetic Survey party led by Major Hibbard (Charles Wellesley), as they spot the smoke from the roused volcano above (“That dormant volcano is waking! The whole plateau will be covered in lava!” ). IMG adds a dark blue tint to the interior cav

ern shots of Bull Montana’s Apeman, changing to a warm amber tint for the scenes between Paula, Roxton, and Malone at the cavern entrance. The marvelous eruption sequence sports a

softer amber tint compared to the fiery orange tint of LUMI, and a clutch of never-before-seen shots in just over 3m of new footage! These include: An extended version of the long shot (extant,

but shortened, in all previous cuts) showing Malone in the foreground (his head occasionally fading into the matte area) as dinosaurs flee and fight behind him, spiced with not-entirely-successful flame effects interrupting their flight. The mon sters on view include a Stegosaurus, a herd of Triceratops, and a ravenous T. rex attacking a Brontosaurus. The latter new footage flows per fectly into the familiar panoramic view of the pla teau miniature, in which the T. rex is still visible astride the Brontosaurus—but that action, com plete in all previous versions, is truncated here:
