CPM Century Extrusion Group says its recent acquisition of Extricom means it is now in a position to offer the widest range of mixing element technologies and metallurgical solutions for intermeshing co-rotat- ing twin-screw extruders. The move means the company will also market the 12-screw Ring Extruder developed by Extricom founder Joself Blach. “The increased demand for higher filler loadings,
improved dispersion and utilisation of natural fibres has driven the development of new mixing technologies to enable production of such materials at high productivity using high-torque and high speed twin-screw com- pounding extruders,” says the company.
According to Thomas Bauer, Extricom Extrusion Sales Director, Extricom’s portfolio of conveying and mixing elements, which have been developed for applications that put high demands on both dispersion and distribution, exceed the perfor-
mance of conventional Erdmenger
designs. For example, the company’s barrier screw element is designed to enhance dispersive mixing by
creating elongational flow across a barrier integrated into the element while its “Segment Screws” are claimed to facilitate distributive mixing through interchanging flow channels among the two screw flights. Bauer also highlights the company’s “T-Profile”
elements, which he says represent a new approach to mixing by manipulating channel depths within the same machine. This modular technology can be applied to conveying and kneading elements. “The addition of Extricom’s selection of metallurgical
offerings to CPM Century’s existing range of screw and barrel materials now represents the industry’s most cost-effective solutions for wear and corrosion,” says Adam Dreiblatt, Director of Process Technology at Century Extrusion. The CPM Extrusion Group now offers more than 70 different materials for screw and barrel components for most OEM extruder models.

Energy saving designs Steer, meanwhile, highlights the advantages of its “fractional-lobed” processor in reduction of energy losses. “In any conventional co-rotating extruders, the rotor rubs the barrel frequently, and this results in significant energy loss - 15% to 30% - and poor output,” a spokesperson for the company says. “The friction between the barrel and the rotor is always high in extruders.” The company claims that its fractional- lobed processor has the ability to avoid rubbing by keeping the rotor suspended in the barrel.
