Ampacet expands in Europe
AkzoNobel joins Delfzijl wood-chemical venture
Dutch coatings and chemicals giant AkzoNobel is part of a consortium hoping to prove the feasibility of a wood-to-chemi- cals production plant at the Chemie Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands.
The plant will be based on
Avantium’s Zambezi process, which converts woody biomass from non-food sources such as
forestry residue, pulp and agricultural by-products into sugars and lignin. The process is said to be particularly suited for making high purity glucose for manufacture of renewable raw materials such as polylactic acid, polyethylene furanoate, polyhydroxalkanoates and polybutyrate, which can all be
used to make plastics, via both catalytic and fermentation processes.
Other partipants in the
project include state-owned forestry group Staatsbosbe- heer, energy giant RWE, and green chemistry incubator Chemport Europe. ❙

Jungbunzlauer and GBL partner
Green Biologics (GBL) is working with Jungbunzlauer Ladenburg on supply of bio-based citrate derivatives for applications in plasticisers. Jungbunzlauer received its
first shipment of 100% renewable BioPure n-butanol
from GBL’s production facility in Little Falls, Minnesota, US, in February and is now producing and shipping bio-based Citrofol BI and BII, which are made from tributyl citrate and acetyl tributyl citrate respectively.

Ampacet has announced a planned expansion of its European production capacity with investments scheduled for its operation at Messancy in Belgium and Dudelange in Luxembourg. The new capacity will come on line in the final quarter of this year, according to the company. The Messancy facility, which is the largest Ampacet production site in Europe, manufactures colour, additive, and black and white masterbatches. The Dudelange plant houses one of the com- pany’s largest white masterbatch lines as well as its Color Center of Excellence. “These new expansions will support us to deliver added value by enhancing our customer’s competitive advantage in the market- place,” said Ampacet Europe Managing Director Marcello Bergamo in a statement. ❙

Croda invests £27m in UK production facility
Speciality chemicals firm Croda International is to invest £27m at its site at Hull in the UK, near doubling existing capacity. The company said the focus will be
on fatty acid amides and slip additives, including Incroslip SL, which the company makes at the UK facility. A spokesperson said the investment “will allow us to meet our customers’

increasing demands in a growing market and to further develop our innovation pipeline”. Croda Polymer Additives also
makes anti-fog, anti-static, anti- scratch, mould release, pigment dispersion, torque release, UV absorption additives and speciality plasticisers. ❙
