foaming reaction, and more consistent weight per bottle. “Chemical foaming agents offer converters many advantages over other technologies like direct gas injection,” says Kerstin Schrinner, Global Product Manager for Additives at Clariant Masterbatches. “Mainly, they are more flexible, easier to handle, and allow for tailored solutions like nucleation. It is easier to switch between different bottle designs or change the density reduction simply by chang- ing the concentration of CFA introduced to the polymer.” According to Clariant, blow moulders have in the

past found it difficult to meet increasingly stringent specifications for bottle-weight variation, which can be as tight as ±1.5gm. The company says this is because standard masterbatch can be difficult to dose accu- rately when the CFA is used at low addition rates. In addition, the masterbatches can be difficult to melt quickly in blow moulding extruders, which means there is less time available in the screw to uniformly and consistently disperse the additive into the matrix polymer. The result can be variation in the cell structure from bottle to bottle - cells may be unevenly distributed

throughout the bottle structure and the foam bubbles may be inconsistent in size and shape. These factors contribute to production of bottles that may not fit within the specified weight tolerance or that may be mechanically unsound. This, in turn, leads to high scrap rates and lost productivity.
