REVIEW

Mushroom Cultivation Business and Marketing Secrecies

A

driaan Smit and Markus Peter-Erik Janssens have written a new e-book, called Mushroom cultivation business and marketing secrecies, published by Cape Connoisseur Champignons Pty Ltd in South Africa. The authors want to share their secrecies that have helped them achieve success in their busi- nesses, so readers can profit from their experience and the chal- lenges they had to overcome.

The first part of the book, written by Smit, deals with Mushroom Cultivation, the second, Business and Marketing, with ‘turning your company into a strong and sustainable business’. This part deals with business planning, marketing and sales. Adriaan Smit is managing director of the South African Gourmet Mushroom Academy, holds a Magister of Science degree in Plant Pathology and a Doctoral degree in Microbiology, and has been a commercial mushroom cultivator for years. The Academy is the leading mushroom training provider in the Southern Hemisphere. After completion of his Master’s degree in the Science Faculties of the universities of Pretoria and Cape Town, Janssens started a soft- ware business with a friend and is director of a research business and mentor to talented young South Africans.

The e-book focuses on ‘essential, often untold, information, needed to be succesful in the competitive mushroom industry and, accor- ding to the authors, is written for the Twitter generation, punchy and compact, with a simple structure. But it is not as accessible and colorfull as for example the Signals publication of Den Ouden. It deals with lots of usefull scientific subjects (substrate, pests and disease) you will find in comparable publications on this matter, but

it is not an allround comprehensive handbook as for instance the Van Griensven book. But these books often don’t deal with substrate based (exotic) mushroom cultivation, and things like people skills, leadership effectiveness and business etiquette like this one. Contains some color illustrations, photos and tables, annoted biblio- graphy and index. 144 pages.

You can easily order this interesting ‘one stop resource’ e-book on www.mushroomacademy for 172 euro (prior to 1 June) or 136 euro if you’re a student.
