Human focused approach Asked about the production method and some special recipies for making compost of good quality, Piasek says that these are well known in the entire branch. Holpol recognised however that on every production level even the most perfect setting of parameters can not replace the mindfull human. It concerns purchasing the best quality raw materials, then monitoring the pre-wetting process to state most accuratelly when the straw is good enough to enter compost production, as well as controlling the tunnel filling and later the blocks forming. “There is much about taking on the responsibility for the part of job I have to do and the awareness that every single worker contributes to the common succcess. For many of the workers it was not obvious that the compost they mix or fill has to be used as a ready product somewhere else. For them its life was over as soon as it left our plant. Therefore, we introduced obligatory farm visits for all our workers and we spend a lot of time on meeting with all our team members.” The weekly meetings of the production and technical department give feedback that allows good planning of the future activities and contribute to problem solving, sometimes even before they appear. Another habit of this human-centred company are the monthly meetings of the management team dedicated to personal development.

Joris and Piasek reveal the secret behind the company’s good condition. “You can only create a happy worker when you have a happy man. When people are generally in good balance it signifi- cantly influences their approach to work and a nice side-effect for the company is the improved efficiency.” This concern for other people goes behind the company itself and involves its clients too. Therefore Holpol dedicated three of their key managers to provide post-sales assistance to the clients. That may be the reason for having clients and delivering compost even to remote eastern locations in Poland. “Our clients from the area of Łosice have plenty of suppliers over there, but it is the question of trust in our quality standards and of their attachement to the kind of respectful service they receive from us.”

The ambition of the company is to provide the widest possible range of compost types and perfect consulting regarding their practical appliance. Following the increasing demand for exotic mushrooms in Poland Holpol offers incubated shiitake substrate and complete information on growing possiblities to Polish producers. Piasek adds: “The interest for exotics is definitely on the rise in Poland right now, we want to be prepared for this development and offer those who one day decide for this production a full service meaning good substrate, growing know-how as well as consulting.”
