On June 1, I was very honoured to receive the ‘Ambassador of the Mushroom Industry Award’ at the Welcome Event at the Mushroom Days. It had been 15 years to the month that I started out as editor of a small Dutch trade journal called Pad- destoelen. Not 25 years, as some think (although, in the months leading up to Mushroom Week it some- times felt like 25). As it is not the habit to make a speech on that stage in Den Bosch, I’d like to take the opportunity to say a few words here. Devoid of any knowledge of the sector whatsoever and hardly any journalistic experience, but with an insatiable curiosity to know more about this curious mushroom world and the burning ambition to write, I started my journey, against the advice of some of my colleagues at Reed Business, who felt there was not much of a story in this ‘simple and boring’ industry anyway. Along the way, I met companions who helped me build what I started. Consultants like Jos Hilkens, who shared much of their knowledge and wisdom, or Magda, or Mark, with whom I spent many hours on the road in Europe and beyond, or Sue op het Veld, who has translated every single issue of Mushroom Business since 2003! Later, when I took the leap to start my own publishing firm, I felt backed by the surprisingly strong support of the advertisers and John Peeters, who had come aboard some time before. As business and work have kept accumulating, I could not do what I do today without him anymore. Finally, there is someone who practically no one knows in the sector, and that’s my wife Annelies. Without her, nothing goes. I also like to thank everyone who has congratulated me by mail, phone and in person. It has never been boring and, most of the time, far from simple. Sometimes, publishers talk about ‘building a community’ around their products, but in my experience, that mushroom community was already there when I launched my magazines. I simply had to enter it, explore it, and listen to your stories. I just consider myself incredibly lucky that you let me in.
