 Publisher Roel Dreve receives the ‘Ambassador of the Mushroom Industry Award’ from Piet Lempens, chairman of the Mushroom Days board.

party marquee where they all enjoyed a fabulous buffet and swinging live music. Eric Vernooij addressed everyone in all the languages he commands, but luckily he left Chinese to a real expert!

The Mushrooms Days

The 34th edition of the Dutch Mushroom days started on 1 June in the familiar surroundings of the Brabanthallen. This year the event literally mushroomed again, with a rise in exhibitor numbers (87), square metres and the number of visitors: 2839 from 78 countries according to the organisers. The trade fair was as well organised and professional as ever, and confirmed its status as the best event for suppliers in the world.

There were two parallel events; a presentation by Léon Dumoulin, who demonstrated the new Dalsem computer software, and an ‘awareness’ meeting organised by a working party of major spawn producers regarding intellectual property. Anton Sonnenberg (WUR) addressed an audience of around 100 and highlighted the problem of illegal copying and derived varieties which threatens to obstruct the development and introduction of truly distinct new varieties (read more about Semon’s lecture elsewhere in this edition).

After the first day of the fair, a Welcome Event was organised that featured the second presen- tation of the ‘Ambassador of the Mushroom Industry Award’. The prize was awarded to Roel Dreve and Henk van den Top. In the words of Piet Lempens ’For some 15 years, Roel has succeeded in making his trade journal a viable factor in the relatively limited arena of the mushroom sector. He reports in a way designed to challenge and provoke but never ignores the interests of the sector. His publications are a unifying link that open a window on the world, in addition to offering an outstanding global

platform for the entire industry.” Van den Top was praised for his ‘crucial contribution to the development of the Dutch sector, and his solid reputation for finding technical solutions’.

Close of Mushroom Week The ISMS conference in Amsterdam ended on 2 June. Greg Seymour expressed his satisfaction and mentioned the ‘real good vibe’ tangible at the 19th edition. During the Closing Ceremony, Ryan Koeslag of Mushrooms Canada presented his country as hosts of ISMS 2021. Following the Conference Global Mushroom Dinner in Den Bosch the same evening, there was only Friday left for the last day of trade fair and Mushroom Week could be cautiously labelled a success. Apart from one Chinese conference visitor being robbed of his laptop on the street, and the fact that – apparently due to financial considerations - the ISMS participants were not, as intended, provided with transport from Amsterdam to the Welcome Event, the week proceeded smoothly and everyone parted company contentedly.
