Multiflex Water Supply System (WSS). The WSS aims to control watering based on moisture measurement data from the cultivations beds, so that identical or even better harvests can be achieved using less water. But more about that later. The system comprises one or more spraying lorries driven by a cable and motor system that move along the side of the beds and evenly distribute water through the whole room.

Split off

In the early 1990s, Joos Vullings safeguarded the company’s continuity by taking on his son John Vullings and Jan Arts. Jan concentrated on the automatic watering systems for the mushroom sector, while John focussed on further develop- ment of Vullings Metaalbewerking with a strong emphasis on optimally utilising the CNC con- trolled-machines. In 2004 the company split into two divisions - Vullings Metaalbewerking BV and Vullings Systemen BV. Jan Arts is still managing director of the latter. Both companies together now have a workforce totalling more than 40. One member of the team is John Hermans, sales man- ager at Vullings Systemen. He told us first about how the anniversary was celebrated. “To mark

this milestone, we organised two open days on 29 and 30 May. Our customers, suppliers, colleges that offer metal working training, other invitees and of course our employees, could take a good look at the company and celebrate with a party. Metalworking remains an important activity of Vullings but besides that, we will further develop the WSS.”

Perfect distribution

“We’ve been producing watering systems for mushrooms since 1995”, explains Hermans, “and since 2004 under the flag of Vullings Systemen. We install projects worldwide and try to take a long-term view whereby we seek to build up more intensive contact with end users. We are often not involved initially in negotiations on complete mushroom projects – a turn-key project is usually sold abroad by turn-key companies. We work as a partner with all these companies, but for custom- ers investing in a new mushroom farm, watering is often way down on the list of priorities. It’s something that often only gets attention later on in the project, and that is an aspect we would like to change. We are trying to intensify our contacts with the end user.
