Many growers know the air circulation in their growing rooms is not as good as it should be, but there are possibly more growers unaware of this fact! In larger rooms – such as those with four tiers of shelves or where the beds are longer than 30 metres – the air circulation pattern is often not optimally uniform. This is often shown by differences in compost temperatures, especially in the centre of the beds and the beds with the least air movement. The second and third beds above the floor are often the most sensitive to a lack of sufficient air circulation compared with the other beds in the same room. The upper bed can also show a different growth pattern, such as pins set deeper in the upper casing soil layer, which results in slightly soiled mushrooms. This problem is easy to solve by placing plastic on the upper beds at the moment of cool down, and then removing it a few hours later. This problem is more awkward to tackle on the lower bed and is often corrected using air liners with a 60 degree bend and by sealing one in every three or five openings in the air ducts in the side and/or central paths between the beds. There are various smoke machines on the market that can be used for air flow visualisation.
A very handy tool I came across at one of my client’s farms was a light- weight, handheld smoke machine. The machine was very reasonably priced and this unit should encourage growers to accurately measure airflow distribution in the rooms more often. Moreover, this machine produces smoke locally, which allows the airflow to be visualised per specific location, instead of creating a whole room flooded with thick fog. A recommended buy for every grower who wants to optimise the cultivation process even further.
