Bursting at the seams The philosophy behind Christiaens means that a lot of construction work is performed on their own premises; steel constructions, machines, climate installations. Growth has created a luxury problem: the five industrial buildings in Horst, each measu- ring 30 x 60 metres, have become too cramped, so two additional halls are being constructed this summer. “This will allow us to organise the internal transport arrangements more efficiently, and use one hall to store products ready for transport without obstructing work in progress, or loading shipping containers half full. Plus we can do serial production more easily, which will result in sa- vings.” The company has vacancies for more staff.
Innovation is key Van Doremaele emphasises that innovation is key at Christiaens. In Germany the company has con- structed a new tray carousel system and in March a growing room was refitted to make it suitable
for practical trials. According to him, the initial results are promising. “At Biofungi in Hungary we are going to build a new farm which will allow the concept to be incorporated easily at a later stage. This plant will also focus intensively on energy recovery. Energy neutral production is already one of our spearheads. At Deckers in Germany, an ammonia cooling system combined with a ground source heat pump is being constructed, and bed cooling is being implemented at Teun Kampen in Malaysia, so less compost needs to be filled.” There is news on the machinery front too. A new mixing drum for on the compost belt has been en- gineered (see photo) and a filling cassette with an open frame (flat belt conveyor ). These innovations will undoubtedly be presented at the next edition of the Mushroom Days in 2015. Christiaens will also be organising another inter- national workshop at the Parkhotel in Horst, prior to the trade fair. ◗
Some clients prefer a filling cassette with an open frame, a version now also available from Christiaens. The flat belt also features in the open frame model, to avoid a reduction of the filling cassette capacity.
