mous. On the other hand, edible fungi cultivation contributes to a sound and sustainable development of the rural economy. As the highest level organization of the industry, CEFA has been devo- ted itself to providing services for producers and related enterprises. For many years, the association provides the basis for government decision-making by creating strategies, spreading technology, promo- ting research and consumption, enhancing management and promoting international cooperation. To promote communication among different countries, the association will give full play to its role as the country hol- ding the vice presidency of the ISMS to provide the members a platform for attending international communication and bilateral and multilateral activities. At the same time, CEFA will provide assistance for the ISMS to expand its membership and enhance information exchange. It will introduce international experts and organize international conferences, participate in the international disease diagnosis center, make inter- national standards, cultivate inter-disciplinary talents and establish the work station of foreign experts of the ISMS. It will cooperate with other countries to make joint efforts to promote the development of the global edible fungus industry.

developments and the science of mushrooms and to stimulate exchange of new ideas between growers and scientists around the world. ISMS sponsors a major international congress on mushrooms, which is held every 3-5 years. Other events are endorsed and supported by ISMS working with national committees. The Society is governed by a council which includes a member appointed by each Corporate Member and six members elected by ballot of the individual members. The Council elects the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, as well as the past president to be the Executive Com- mittee.

The water balance at the end of the first flush can vary widely and depends, among other things, on the production of the first flush, the climate, compost activity, the casing soil quality and how it was applied. To ensure good yields and quality in the second flush, bringing the moisture content of the casing soil back to the right level after the first flush is crucial. This is easier for mechanical farms to achieve than manual farms. The difference is spraying onto the mushrooms – with mechanised harvesting water is sprayed onto the mushrooms, while on manual picking farms they are not usually sprayed. Mechanical harvesting farms also experience problems when the casing soil is light, or the flush extra heavy. Manual farms do not usually water the first flush and here all the management parameters must be optimised to ensure an acceptable moisture content in the casing after the first flush. In warm or humid seasons, preferably apply water immediately after the flush has been comple- tely harvested, over a period of eight to ten hours. The precise amount greatly depends on the filling weight of the compost, the activity, and the moisture content of the compost and casing soil. The volume may be between four and 18 l/m2. Under Dutch conditions, the amount sprayed is typically between 10 and 16 l/m2. If the moisture content of the casing soil is insufficient before the start of the second flush, manual farms can consider spraying 1.5 to 3 l/m2 on the day prior to the start of the second flush or on the first picking day of the second flush. Make sure evaporation is satisfactory. Watering the second flush is standard procedure for farms that harvest mechanically, providing there are no diseases.
