POLAND

audience were going to answer the question whether the Polish industry is only following trends or maybe can be regarded as trendsetter. The question remained unanswered. The conference was visited by members of the GEPC which were later to meet in Warsaw. The guests noticed with pleasure how excellent Poland has used European funds and how the sector has fulfilled even the most difficult quality requirements on the European market. The discussion participants stressed that it is important to monitor whether all mushrooms sold in Europe are really grown here. A few cases are known when Chinese mushrooms were sold as European. The industry must together fight such unfair practices, was the conclusion. During Pieczarkalia, traditional football matches between companies were played, and guests could taste dishes prepared for a culinary competition. On the second day of the fair, the leaders of the branch were awarded with the ‘Pieczary’ awards. In the cate- gory ‘Best product’, Wokas casing soil won, and the ‘Top innovation’ prize went to Krzysztof Szewczuk for an automatic picking trolley. A few years ago, the Siedlce area was viewed as Poland ‘B’. Now it is the synonym of big develop- ment and success. “We have here a very good dairy industry and there is the winning mushroom industry in Europe. Pieczarkalia has certainly something to do with this”, concluded Minister of Agriculture Sawicki, who visited the fair on 27th June. .◗
