Klaus- Dieter Hesse

On 15 December 2013, Klaus-Dieter Hesse, 64, director of Pilzzucht Hesse, died following a tragic accident at his company in Weidenhau- sen, Germany. He is survived by a 12-year-old daughter. Hesse was a well-known figure among growers of lignicolous mushrooms. He was one of the first professional producers in West Europe of steri- lised substrates for lignicolous mushrooms. He started his first cultivation trials after completing his studies in agricultural engineering, and be- came an independent grower in the 1980s. When a market emerged for ready-to-use substrates, he seized the opportunity and started producing for third parties. The production capacity grew

along with the demand, and with the current production volume of 100 tons of substrate per week, his company was one of the major players on the exotic mushroom market in West Europe. In 1991 Klaus- Dieter Hesse became an active member of the HLP (Hessische Landesfachgrup- per für Pilzzucht): he took part in most of the HLP study trips and three times hosted the annual HLP meeting in November. Klaus- Dieter still had many plans for the future, but fate as it often cruelly does, chose to intervene. We will remember Klaus Dieter Hesse as a true pioneer in the field, a taciturn and hard worker who was highly respected by his clients and col- leagues alike.
