680 per cent profit However, the beginning of his story was not all that promising: “One day I read a newspaper article by a spawn producer in which starting growers were presented with an amazing financial plan: Spawn 150 g
Substrate 5kg (dry weight) Fuel, bags, plastic, etc. Total
Yield in three flushes: 10 kg x 14.7$/2.16$ *100% = 680% profit
$ 1.20 $ 0.76 $ 0.20 $ 2.16
$ 1.47 = $ 14.7
The author of the article promised to buy all the mushrooms grown in this way from me. It seemed to be an attractive idea, so I purchased some spawn and made my first substrate. But 90% of the spawn I was sent was mouldy, and I harvested just 500 grams of mushrooms - all poor quality - from 100 kg of substrate. When I informed the spawn producer, they simply said I had to improve the hygiene of my
employees and they refused to buy my mushrooms. After the same situation repeated itself three times, I was almost bankrupt. I decided to run my own investigation and discovered that the myth of 680% profit was basically being kept alive by a doctor, who over the years had trained more than 3000 students at a cost of 30$ per study. Needless to say, no one had made any money at all - except for the doctor.” Shibeshi is a dreamer, but not an idle one. He has a clear vision of the future: “I’m determined not to give up. I want to save hard so I can invest in a mushroom farm that can offer local people a future. But firstly I need to learn more about spawn and how to grow white button mushrooms. I have put my own personal story down in writing and sent it to various compa- nies in Europe. Scelta, Mycelia and PUM replied, and I hope that other companies will also be inspired to help make my dream come true.” ◗
