Editorial The year in review E

very year when I write this particular piece I tend to open with ‘This has been another

busy year’ or words to that effect. Without fail the following year then trumps the previous one and so the cycle continues. As usual the world of RYA Training has been filled with activity, opportunity and plenty of challenges.

On a very sad note we lost a long-serving and much loved member of the RYA Training team in early October after a long battle with cancer. Many of you will have known Annie Lawler, our Senior Administrator for the Training Department who worked for the RYA for more than 12 years. Our thoughts are with Annie’s many friends and family. There have been several additions to the RYA Training team here in Hamble and I would urge you to introduce yourselves at instructor conferences or if you happen to be visiting the office in Hamble. By the new year we

should be back at full strength in the administration team. On a very positive note, RYA training continues to grow in popularity and our numbers of instructors continue to increase. We now have centres in 58 countries and our qualifications have never been recognised in more places than they are today. Whilst the total number of

certificates issued for 2016 isn’t yet finalised at the time of going to print, the indications are that the year has been a reasonably solid one in terms of numbers for most training centres, be they volunteer- based clubs or commercial-based

businesses. There is no question that many UK centres felt the impact of the Brexit referendum, as is the case with any major political upheaval, and we can only hope that the impact corrects itself reasonably quickly once it becomes clearer what Brexit will actually mean. Thank you for your continued

support of RYA training through 2016. I wish you a very happy Christmas and the very best for a healthy and prosperous New Year. With best wishes, Richard Falk RYA Director of Training and Qualifications
