New Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased packs

I

n September’s Wavelength we wrote about the change in style for the new shorebased assessments (see September issue, page 8). Here is a quick summary of what you need to know about using and ordering the new packs.

Course duration The teaching time for the course remains at 40 hours. In addition to this, your students will need to complete some homework and the assessments. The time for assessments has been extended from five to six hours to take into account the new question format.

Change of assessment style

While the course syllabus hasn’t changed, the assessment includes more questions to cover more of the syllabus. Course topics can be taught and assessed in any order. For simplicity they are listed in the exercise book in alphabetical order. The final assessment is still based on IRPCS, chartwork and weather. The IRPCS and chartwork assessments are still as you know them, but the weather paper has been removed as a standalone memory test, and replaced with a new assessment on passage making. Students will need to do some homework to prepare their passage plan, then use weather

information to help their decision making process. The purpose of this addition is to prepare students better for future practical exams and real-life passages. For instructors there is enhanced guidance in the instructor pack to help with marking the open questions, identifying where errors in principle are made and where credit can be given for answers that don’t quite fall within a question’s intended parameters but do display an understanding of the subject.

Ordering The new packs will be available once existing stock has run out at the RYA, which is expected to be early 2017. Training centres can continue to use the current packs until their stock runs out. At the point where you no longer have sufficient old stock to cover a full course and make your first order of the new packs, you will be able to exchange a small number of 2016 assessment and exercise booklets

for the new 2017 booklets. Please note, this is NOT an exchange of old packs, but the provision of new exercises as a supplement for old packs.

All students on a course must use the same edition of the pack, so please don’t mix old and new packs on a single course. The order code remains unchanged (YMAP: northern hemisphere and SYMAP: southern hemisphere) . You will easily spot when you

first receive the new packs as they will look like this:

News for First Aid Instructors 2

016 saw the introduction of the 2015 Guidelines, a new

First Aid Manual and the HSE announcement that training in the use of a defibrillator must be included on all Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work courses by 2017. This change and their

statement that workplace first aid kits should contain tourniquets and haemostatic

dressings if required following a risk assessment, with training on EFAW and FAW courses, led to a review of the RYA First Aid course syllabus. The syllabus has been updated, with these minor changes: » CPR, including the use of an AED

» Blood loss and the control of bleeding, including the use of trauma dressings, and an

awareness of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings. Further information is included in the 2015 update from the Resuscitation Council and the Resources section of the RYA website. Also for 2017 a system will be

introduced for the updating of First Aid Instructors. Full details will be sent out early 2017.
