WELCOME TO THE TOMORROW’S HEALTH & SAFETY YEARBOOK 2015/2016.
As we enter the fifth decade of the Health and Safety at Work Act, many in the industry are asking ‘what’s next?’
HSE’s latest workplace statistics show that less than half as many workers were fatally injured in 2014/15 compared with 20 years ago. This is undoubtedly an improvement the sector should be proud of, but it still means 142 workers lost their lives. It seems the safety professional’s work is never done.
You’ll notice I omitted the word health just now – and it’s far too easy to do. Workplace health issues have been pushed aside for many years while the sector pulled together to tackle the often more visible risks to physical safety.
Fortunately, those days appear to be behind us. I speak to people from across the industry every day and I’m pleased to report the majority are now putting great emphasis on minimising health risks. Later in this yearbook, you’ll hear from the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) on why this is a vital shift in focus.
Over the past year, there has also been a swarm of legislative changes, as the government sought to ‘cut the red tape’ so often associated with the sector. The Deregulation Bill was met with suspicion and criticism from many, yet it was given Royal Assent in March 2014. The coming year will shed light on how effective (or not) the new legislation is. We can only wait to see whether or not it will impact on health and safety incidents in the workplace.
We’ve also seen the introduction of the new Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 in recent months. Find out about the British Council’s take on these changes on page six.
On a personal note, this was my first year in the health and safety industry and it has been fascinating. I’m privileged to write about and for a group of people who make a real difference to the working lives of millions of people.
Keep up the good work and be proud. Registered in England & Wales No: 06786728
