EDITOR’S VOICE

Welcome to the 2015 Tomorrow’s Health & Safety Personal Protection supplement.

It’s a fact of business that some industries are more dangerous than others. The inherent risks of working in sectors like construction and oil and gas can’t always be avoided or controlled. In these situations, it falls on employers to ensure that all workers are protected from potential hazards.

From hands and feet to eyes and ears, staff should be protected from top to toe. Businesses can mitigate physical threats to safety, and comply with regulations, by providing staff with useful, effective and easy-to-use personal protective equipment (PPE) – as well as full training on how to use it. However, sometimes this is more complicated than it seems.

BAE systems is one company that wasn’t content to give its munitions workers ‘off-the-rack’ PPE. In this supplement, you’ll find out how DuPont and its partners developed a bespoke safety suit to safeguard the defence giant’s employees in the event of an explosion. It was no easy feat and required hours of testing and re-designing, but you can see the final result here.

Traditionally, issues on personal protection have focused on physical harm, but in this supplement we also wanted to draw attention to mental health. On page 22, life and career coach, Wendy Smith, offers her tips on looking out for signs of stress in the workforce – and helping people to manage it.

We also have features on the latest in customised ear protection, what you should wear to clean up a trauma scene, and how to set up a successful respiratory protection programme.

Enjoy the issue and stay safe.
