COVER STORY

Abrasion, knocks and scrapes are constant

dangers in many work situations, so resistance to and effective protection from them is also important. Grip It® MAX’s three-quarter TPE coating, which is

reinforced in critical areas, offers better resistance

to abrasion and tears than traditionally

dipped gloves and makes for a more robust product than those coated in latex or nitrile.

For those engaged in warehousing and distribution, good grip when handling and moving goods can make all the difference. Essentially, the better the operative’s grip, the less force he or she has to exert to move – for

example, a carton, trolley or lifting device – so the risk of musculoskeletal injury is

mitigated. Furthermore, having a firm grip on an object means

there is less risk of dropping it and causing injury to the worker or others.

Another feature

that really sets the Grip It® MAX apart

is its ergonomic construction. Most similar types of glove on the market are constructed flat, i.e. in the ‘resting’ state, the gloves fall flat. But in the relaxed human hand, the thumb drops down – this is known as the ‘underslung thumb’. So, even though flat

construction is much easier and quicker to achieve,

Polyco designed the Grip It® MAX to follow the natural positon of the hand at rest to allow for ease of movement. Also like the hand, the glove has tapered fingers, ensuring tasks that require dexterity can be performed without difficulty.

“AS MANY OF THE ACTIVITIES IN THIS INDUSTRY ARE UNDERTAKEN OUTDOORS, A GLOVE THAT CAN GRIP AS WELL IN A DOWNPOUR AS IT CAN IN A DROUGHT IS UNDOUBTEDLY USEFUL.”

“Because of this more complicated construction,” added Garvey, “we really had to work hard to ensure the molten TPE reached all parts of the mould. The result is a glove that does not put the hand under any pressure – straining to relax – when it is at rest.”

It is also worth noting that while most of this type of product manufacturing is outsourced to firms in Asia, the Grip It® MAX is manufactured in the UK. Polyco also partnered with a UK injection-moulding specialist for that part of the process.

Overall, a glove that ensures a strong and secure grip in wet and dry conditions, which is supremely comfortable to wear and does not compromise dexterity, will have a positive impact on health and safety in any industry. Countless activities carried out in workplaces every day involve the hands, so making sure they are protected and effective is a priority.

To highlight the extraordinary ability of Grip It® MAX, Polyco produced a short film, featuring an unexpected scenario and a familiar but unusual filming approach.
