3M EMPLOYEE WINS NATIONAL ‘GUARDIAN
ANGEL’ AWARD A 3M manufacturing co-ordinator has been recognised with an honour from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for her dedication to the health and safety of her colleagues.
Cheryl Lambert, who works at the diversified technology company’s UK centre for healthcare products in Loughborough, has won a RoSPA Guardian Angel Award. The accolade celebrates individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the safety of others.
Cheryl was nominated for the award after actively promoting safety in her workplace for the past decade. One of her most recent achievements was introducing a programme that encourages open discussions about health and safety in the workplace.
As part of the initiative, employees are asked to write any potential hazards they see on a red card and any examples of best practice on a green card. These are then displayed on noticeboards around the production site so everyone can be made aware of the points raised.
Cheryl is always striving to find ways to improve the safety of others and

The Ladder Exchange allows users to exchange old and/or defective ladders for safe new ones - at a discount - at any of the scheme’s participating partners located throughout the UK.

The behavioural safety programme has been running for around 18 months and was initially trialled in Cheryl’s department but, due to its success, has now been rolled out to nearly 200 employees in total.
It also champions safe ladder use and the need to inspect and maintain ladders at regular intervals in accordance with the regulations.
Ladder Association Chairman, Martin Brooke, commented: “Over two million people work on ladders daily in the UK and we want all those workers to work safely. If you take a chance with a faulty ladder you are risking an accident and potentially your life.
“We are delighted to champion the Ladder Exchange because it’s an initiative, alongside formal training, that can really make a difference and help keep people safe.”

Martin Brooke added: “Each year the competition only serves to reinforce the need for proper ladder training. Users must equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to use ladders safely and productively. Training is vital.”
