EDITOR’S NOTE EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the Tomorrow’s FM Yearbook for 2016/17.

Last year I struggled to pass comment on the industry as a whole, having only worked in FM for six months I was unable to draw many conclusions from the year in FM. This time however, as I move into my second year as editor, whilst I still can’t claim expert knowledge, I feel I have covered enough subject matter to be able to give you a comprehensive overview of the last year in FM:

At TFM HQ we have announced the winners of our 2016 Tomorrow’s FM Awards; Katrin Dispenser Range from Metsä topped the list of finalists, to take first place in 2016. Katrin will receive their trophy at Interclean in Amsterdam in May.

I also attended the BIFM Awards night in October 2015, where FM Guru Martin Pickard picked up a well-earned Lifetime Achievement Award and Nationwide & Carillion Plc took the title of FM Team of the Year. It was a very enjoyable evening and it was a great opportunity to hit the dance floor with so many of you, I’m already looking forward to this year’s event!

Away from the glitz and glamour of awards, there have been some considerable industry changes, the first being that Northwood Hygiene Products acquired the issued share capital of Disposables UK Limited in June of 2015, and the second is the 2016 Summer Budget, which saw the surprise introduction of the Living Wage for all over-25s. Whilst cuts have been made across the board, the national adoption of a higher Minimum Wage (or Living Wage) is a huge win for employees across the FM industry.

However, the changes have been met with spectral opinion; where many are pleased to see their average pay increase; there are fears from many that clients will not be accepting of the increased labour costs in their contracts, which could lead to cuts. At the Workplace Futures event in January 2016, many expressed concern as to how the Living Wage would affect their bottom line.

Elsewhere in the industry, we were shocked to learn that The Board at The Building Futures Group had announced that the company would cease trading in January this year, following two years in business. The BFG had previously offered training and membership services to Britain’s building maintenance, management and services sectors and it’s disappearance from the Facilities Management arena has left many unsure about the impact this will have on other leading industry bodies.

Evidently there is a lot going on the world of FM for 2016/17, so please continue to get in touch to share your thoughts and opinions of the topics covered in the magazine. I hope you will find this yearbook as useful as ever and I look forward to seeing you all again soon!
