SCOTLAND’S BIGGEST HOSPITAL PROTECTED FROM DRONE DAMAGE
Flooring solutions for healthcare facilities have to meet a long list of challenges to maintain the hygienic integrity and the trust of patients in the face of challenging working conditions, strict budgets and long lifecycle requirements, Flowcrete explain how they have achieved this in Glasgow.
The new, 1,100-bed South Glasgow University Hospital installed a complex arrangement of integrated flooring solutions across the sprawling facility.
The £842 million hospital applied tens of thousands of square metres of specialist screeds and resin flooring material across the multi-storey car park facility, plant rooms, back of house areas and the subterranean Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV) tunnel.
The South Glasgow University Hospital is at the cutting edge of healthcare facility design. To support the scope and scale of the site, a subterranean tunnel was built along which AGV’s can transport the majority of the hospital’s goods. This innovative tunnel was a key logistics request, as an efficient system for moving equipment around the vast complex was vital.
A floor finish was required for a 6,000m2
area that would be able to
withstand the movement of 22 robotic drones carrying heavy loads along the route 24 hours-a-day and exerting up to 725lb of pressure per square inch.
An assortment of flooring products was utilised to meet this demand. A 3mm layer of the epoxy solution Flowshield SL was installed above a Flowscreed Industrial Top screed; this was then topped with another epoxy, Flowcoat TL. Aluminium Oxide particles were incorporated into the floor finish to enhance traction underfoot.

The seamless and robust nature of the resin systems helps to maintain a hygienic environment by avoiding unwanted contaminants accumulating in hard-to-clean gaps in the floor surface. The impermeable, flat, chemical-resistant surface also makes it easy for the hospital’s cleaning regime to wash away any dirt, bacteria or grime that falls onto the floor.
This durability will not only protect the South Glasgow University Hospital’s floors for the future but it will pay the facility back over time.
Additionally, 50,000m2 of the surface
damp proof membrane Hydraseal DPM was applied throughout the hospital’s plant rooms and back of house areas to protect the floor finish from the damaging effects of moisture vapour emanating from the concrete substrate. The flexible polyurethane coating Flowcoat LXP was then installed to create a highly functional surface, able to withstand continuous use and impacts from the heavy on-site equipment.
20,000m2 of the methyl methacrylate
(MMA) based floor coatings Deckshield Rapide ED and Deckshield Rapide ID was applied throughout the hospital’s multi- storey car park, including on the exposed top deck and on the ramp.
Deckshield Rapide was chosen for this area of the complex as it has been
designed to meet the operational challenges experienced within car park facilities. It is able to withstand the heavy wheeled traffic, continuous use and exposure to automotive oils and liquids that car parks undergo.
Grey and blue coloured floors were chosen for the car park so that bright and colourful walkways could be incorporated into the floor to aid the safe navigation of pedestrians. High- quality aesthetics are important within car parks, as first impressions start from the moment a visitor drives onto the site, and the initial experience should be of a clean, appealing and unbroken surface.
The MMA formulation of Deckshield Rapide ED allows for fast track installations that take a fraction of the time of alternative car park decking solutions. On average a Deckshield Rapide ED floor will achieve a full traffic and chemical cure within two to three hours.
These flooring choices meant that the South Glasgow University Hospital could rest assured that its daily activity would be supported by a reliable and effective platform, able to withstand the challenges of the site and with the necessary properties required to keep the site clean, safe and active.
