10 QUESTIONS 10 QUESTIONS WITH... Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions.
This month, we chatted to Jackie Furey, Client Services Director at Baker Stuart Consultancy Ltd, and Deputy Chair for the WIFM.
Q1 Q2
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
I worked at a newsagent close to my mum’s house from the age of 11 when my parents separated.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
Just by chance, sadly I can’t say it was a targeted career choice; I joined a leading commercial removals company as their Sales Ledger Accountant. I was really interested in what went into the planning of a large scale relocation project and I was given the chance to work with the Move Management Division on projects, from that day forward I have never looked back.
Q3
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I have to say, retail consultant, business woman and broadcaster, Mary Portas. She is my absolute idol and completely inspirational. Mary is passionate about making a difference, has a great eye for detail and only believes in doing a job well, but most of all she sees the value in people and through empowerment, motivation and coaching, helping them to be the best they can be.
Q4
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY?
A classic MG BGT in snap dragon yellow, I owned one when I was 25 and regret the day I sold it.
Q5
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? The rise of the TFM providers have

THEY BE AND WHY? Now there’s a question; Winston Churchill, Robin Williams, Marilyn Monroe, Jamie Oliver would be cooking and Josh Groban on Music.
Q9
meant that the specialist consultants and service providers have struggled to compete in their arena. I believe there is room enough in our industry for everyone and we should encourage the TFMs to engage with experts in their field rather than work to the mantra, they “self-deliver”.
Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO
BE WHEN YOU WERE
GROWING UP? I had two firm choices in my head when I was growing up; either a police woman or a chef.
I was discouraged by a family friend not to become a chef as it was long hours and low pay. The police woman I had to forego as I am not very good with accidents. I once witnessed one, whereby a police woman cradled a person who was seriously injured whilst waiting for the ambulance; it’s good to know your limitations.
Q7 Q8
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
Walk my dog, listen to live music, make jewellery and sing.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? The FM profession has come of age and now receives the respect it deserves. The board room now recognises the fact that after staff, real estate is the next biggest cost to an organisation’s bottom line, an effective and proactive FM can make the difference between a profitable and not profitable organisation through running efficient and cost- effective real estate.
I think as technology continues to drive change for a more agile working environment, and employers adapt their management style for staff to deliver work based upon output, as opposed to attendance, the place of work will become a social hub.

AND WHY?’ Polperro in Cornwall; it’s more of a town than a city, but somewhere I hope to call home one day and my favourite place on the planet.
