CATERING

GETTING IN THE ZONE

As so much interior space is taken up by flooring, it makes a lasting impression. Floor coverings can also be used to create subtle zoning in the catering and hospitality sector. The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in Jersey has specified Karndean Designflooring LVT to reflect the natural beauty of the hotel’s surroundings and define public dining areas.

Interior designers and architects continue to look to Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) as a tough, practical alternative to natural materials in commercial spaces. Stone and wood effect LVT offer the sophistication, look and feel of natural products whilst providing the durability and low maintenance needed for heavy footfall areas.

Moving away from the traditional straight laying patterns and towards a distinctive look, designers have looked to incorporate sweeping curves, rug effects and borders around key areas to add interest. With the endless design capabilities of LVT, it is possible to create a statement, add character and create an artisan sensibility unique to each location. This can be easily achieved by combining wood and stone effect floor surfaces and introducing inlaid feature pieces such as logos and slogans.

Most recently the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in Jersey opted to use the distinctive design of Karndean’s Opus Magna against existing carpet and tiles to guide guests around different spaces. Leading design practice Trevillion Interiors Ltd were tasked with re-inventing the reception, bar and restaurant areas of the hotel.

In a bid to reflect the beautiful picturesque waterfront surroundings, Trevillion looked to bring a flavour of ‘New England’ when specifying the

cool brown and unfinished look of Karndean’s Opus Magna wood planks.

John Mather, director of Trevillion Interiors Ltd commented: “Having previously specified Karndean in many bar and restaurant projects, we’re extremely confident in selecting wood and stone designs to fit key areas. Unlike real timber, Karndean’s luxury vinyl wood designs are much more durable and the endless design capabilities mean you’re never limited at the early design stage.

“We opted to use the distinctive design of Opus Magna against carpet and existing tiles to guide guests around different spaces. The finished areas look stunning and inviting to all, which ultimately was our objective.”

Fergus O’Donovan, general manager of Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Jersey commented: “We were immediately impressed with the new design, and the concept really complements our surroundings perfectly. The floor design is fresh and clean, and we’ve already had fantastic feedback from our guests on the new look.”

Paul Barratt, Managing Director of Karndean Designflooring said: “We have seen this trend for subtle zoning grow and designers are now beginning to incorporate the use of our full sized tiles matched with our FreeLength designs.

This allows seamless integration that will help to define an area without the requirement of a physical divide.”

He said: “In 2014 extra-large tiles rose in popularity for their ability to add an instant ‘wow factor’ and the illusion of space to any commercial décor.” Ideal for achieving a modern minimalist look, large format tiles enable a room to appear automatically streamlined and spacious - perfect for open plan office, hospitality, leisure and retail environments.

Karndean Designflooring’s LooseLay planks and tiles have been designed specifically to aid reduced downtime and fitting costs for the client. A unique friction grip backing and increased dimensional stability secures the floor firmly in place over most hard floors as long as they’re smooth, sound and dust-free.

LVT also offers significant benefits in anti-slip properties compared to real wood and stone. “We are predicting a drive towards higher slip ratings in commercial projects as architects and specifiers face pressure from clients to reduce the risk of litigation. In response we are launching a new range, Opus Enhance, featuring eight of our most popular Opus designs with an even higher slip resistance” Paul said.
