PALLATIVE CARE

The starting point for this approach is set out in a toolkit developed by Middlesex University, Public Health England and the NCPC. As the document itself says, it is not a complete How To guide, but it is a comprehensive overview of the issues.

If there’s one word that runs through all this – the Charter, Ambition 6, the public health approach – its community. The NCPC leads the Dying Matters coalition, which encourages people to feel comfortable talking

about death, dying and bereavement, and in doing so to put written plans in place, to make a will, plan your funeral, decide on organ donation, decide on your future care. Although there is still a lot of work to do, the campaign has been a success in terms of helping break the taboo.

But Dying Matters now wants to add something beyond talking and planning. We want people to become involved in their communities, helping others who are nearing

death or caring for someone who is, and in encouraging others to do so. Currently half of people die in hospital, but most of those who express a preference say they would rather die at home, and the Government is committed to make all the options about place of death as good as the care received in hospital. As individuals, and as communities, we need to be ready for this.
