Help is means-tested, so if the local authority agrees they need help, they may ask them to fund the cost of care themselves or they may pay for it. Often the person’s savings and assets will be taken into consideration.

The person in question may also be eligible for NHS Continuing Care; a package of NHS-funded care if they are considered to have a ‘Primary Health Need’. More information here.


There will come a time when the person will no longer be safe alone so it is necessary to plan for the future to enable you to make the right choices carefully, rather than making important decisions in haste.


You will become the parent and the person with dementia will eventually become the child. You may have to make unpopular decisions on the person’s behalf, but if you’re acting in their best interests and doing it to keep them safe then it’s the right thing to do.


Finally, remember to look after yourself. You may be feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. But it is important to take some time out for yourself. Exercise is a great way to boost physical and mental wellbeing and also let off some steam.
