SYSTEM SOLUTIONS FOR WETROOMS

Wetroom installations are increasingly popular but can prove tricky. This is why a system approach to product selection is most important, says Norcros Adhesives.

A wetroom is considered to be an installation where the shower base is at the same level as the floor. Good design, water-resistant background materials, high quality tiles, grouts and adhesives, as well as correct installation methods are all important to achieving a safe and long-lasting wetroom.

Tile adhesive, grout and preparation products manufacturer Norcros Adhesives offers a range of systems and solutions which can be used by tilers to help achieve a successful result when creating a wetroom.

To ensure a robust waterproof substrate, Norcros offers its high performance Pro Board in a choice of thicknesses from 6mm to 70mm. Manufactured from high density polystyrene, Pro Board comprises a rigid insulation core, coated with a specially formulated reinforced cementitious coating ideal for the application of tiles.

A wide range of ceramic tiles may be used in a wetroom but they should conform to the requirements of BS EN 14411. Glass and ceramic mosaics, as well as natural stone tiles can also be used. Some agglomerated natural stone tiles can suffer discolouration in a wet room environment. Glazed or unglazed porcelain or fully vitrified ceramic tiles can also be used, provided they conform to the relevant British Standard.

Norcros provides a number of options when it comes to tile adhesives suitable

textured smooth finish grouting material for joints up to 5mm wide. It is now being made available in an array of new colours to match the full range of both the Norcros 4 into 1 silicone sealants and floor and wall grouts.

In addition to the usual white, crème and sandstone, Norcros Stop Mould Flexible Grout now comes in jasmine, dark grey, anthracite,

for wetrooms. Norcros Rapid Porcelain Grey Adhesive is a cement-based thin bed adhesive designed for fixing fully vitrified porcelain, ceramic and stone tiles to a variety of surfaces. Being water-resistant, it is suitable for wetroom installations. It has excellent thermal ageing properties and is therefore particularly suitable for heated floors. It is also available in white, to avoid staining when used together with light-coloured stone.

One Part Flexible Grey is a slow setting, highly polymer-fortified adhesive mortar for use on walls and floors. It requires only the addition of water as it is specially formulated with Rock-Tite polymeric binders to impart flexibility, water resistance and increased strength – usually only achieved by the addition of polymer admixtures. It is ideal for tiling in heavy duty areas, including commercial showers and locations where thermal variation may occur.

When it comes to grouting the tiled surfaces of a new wetroom, Norcros Stop Mould Flexible Wall Grout is a fine

alabaster, brown and grey.

As one would expect from Norcros Adhesives, being backed by a lifetime guarantee, Stop Mould Flexible Grout performs excellently. The inclusion of Rock-Tite polymeric binders make the product suitable for use with all types of tiles, including glass and mosaics, where it has excellent adhesion characteristics. Its high flexibility and strength make it ideal for dry-lined walls and surfaces subject to repeated vibration, such as would be found in power showers.

“Used together, the Norcros product range adds up to a system which can be used by the installer to create beautiful and reliable wetrooms, with tiled surfaces that will last for many years,” says Mandy Searle, technical services manager. “We are aware that wetrooms can present some particular problems for the tile fixer, but if a systems approach is followed and the appropriate products are used and correctly installed, there is no reason a successful outcome cannot be achieved.”
