When specifying flooring for commercial kitchens and catering facilities resin should be first choice says John Lord Ltd.


Efficiency and safety under foot is a high priority when choosing an appropriate floor for a fast-paced, commercial catering environment. The daily regime of running a kitchen can be very demanding and therefore, kitchens need to be easily cleaned and maintained to keep up with hygiene standards.

In Oxford, John Lord went back to school to take on an extensive renovation to the Cheney Academy in Headington. As the flooring was looking dated and tired, the Academy decided to create a more aesthetically pleasing and modern look.

Resin floors, with their hard-wearing capabilities, lend themselves particularly well to educational establishments due to the high level of footfall and variation of uses they receive under one roof. The Academy wanted one resin flooring system, which would be installed throughout the kitchens and dining hall areas, and into the changing facilities.


The solution was the highly attractive, Acrigard FK flooring system from the exclusive John Lord range. The methyl methacrylate resin floor encapsulates an infinite variety of coloured flakes to produce a truly decorative appearance. The natural colours of light and dark slate were chosen, providing a sophisticated neutral tone around the school.

incredibly hygienic, easily cleaned and chemical-resistant, making it an ideal choice for kitchens and their daily cleaning regimes.


Due to the fast curing characteristics of the formula, the floor was installed incredibly fast allowing for minimal disruption to normal school life. The resin floor is now installed in the establishment providing a complete, practical package, and one that will stand the test of time, and whatever the pupils can throw at it.

In more industrial catering environments, where raw meats, fats and greases are present, a different range of resin flooring from John Lord is recommended. The Uragard HT resin flooring range has the option of a high grade anti-slip profile for maximum safety under foot, which is an ideal solution where environments get wet and slippery.


A catering facility dealing with meats on a daily basis had their old vinyl floor replaced with a new, red, Uragard HT resin floor. The facility chose a medium grade anti-slip profile, which gave them the optimum balance between safety under foot and cleanability.


In addition, the chemical and temperature resistance of the resin flooring kept maintenance to a minimum. This is an important factor in catering because unlike the previous vinyl flooring, which peeled, bubbled and curled under pressure creating trip hazards around the workplace, the new resin floor remained seamless, waterproof and hardwearing.
